Two centuries ago, death was a constant companion. With an average lifespan of 40 years and a high death toll among children, learning to live with death meant learning to fear it less. Dying was not the great tragedy for people of this time, but to die and not be properly mourned was a deeper fear. Today we marvel at the beauty and grace inspired by loss. Sometimes breathtakingly sad, yet precious and quietly peaceful, these pieces reflect the respect and devotion to lost souls. Mourning jewels are not intended to be macabre but intended to live on, as love does.
