Rings such as these became popular in the late 18th century. In 1774, the long awaited news of the pregnancy of Marie Antoinette was marked by rings 'au firmament' with diamonds scattered like stars in in the midnight sky on a dark blue ground, and the birth of the dauphin in 1785 by 'bagues a l'enfantement' centered on a large diamond.
