Georgian Glass Pearl Earrings

In the 18th century, glass pearl earrings were a popular alternative to natural pearls, and they commanded great prices. These imitation pearls were made by coating the interior of blown glass with a pearlescent ‘nacre’ derived from fish scales and gelatin. Earrings of the time reflected the Baroque and Rococo fashion, favoring long, dangling styles like girandole and pendant earrings.  They were a staple in 18th-century jewelry, but their delicate nature makes them very rare today.
