Early 19th Century White Paste Rivière Necklace
Georgian era 19th Century white paste rivière necklace. Exceptional quality. Each cushion shaped paste stone is set in a square silver on gold cut away settings. 43 bright foiled paste are slightly graduated in size. English in origin. Circa 1820.
Measures 15.50" in length. Hidden push tab closure at back. Lays beautifully on the neck for such a delicate necklace.
This necklace comes with a pair of paste earrings that were originally part of the necklace. Two links from the back were converted into earrings. If desired, the necklace can be restored to full length with the links or the earrings can be kept as is.
Paste stones are made from highly refractive leaded glass but paste jewels were not considered counterfeit jewelry. It was made to achieve certain decorative effects which were rarely realized with diamonds and other precious stones. In the absence of the high cost of materials, paste artisan skill's were often developed and extended much further than those of diamond workers. It is said at its peak of popularity, in Paris alone there were 300 jewelers specializing in paste Jewels.. At its best, antique paste is to be compared only with the finest jewelry for sheer artistry and craftsmanship.
