Late 18th-Century Garnet Poissarde Earrings

Continental Europe, circa 1800

Foiled-back rose-cut garnets of deep red are set in 14k gold, their wires curving from back to front, a detail true to 18th-century craft. This style was initially worn by the fishermen’s wives of Paris, les poissardes. This style became a symbol of resilience during the Revolution. These earrings carry that history lightly: warm gold, dark stone, and the sense of something once both humble and fiercely proud.

Deep red garnets like these are referred to as Perpignan as they likely originated from that region in France.

Measures .80" in drop length and .20" wide.
