19th Century Onyx and Diamond Butterfly Locket
19th Century onyx and diamond butterfly locket, in 15k gold. A carved single piece of black onyx forms the locket with a glass compartment on verso. The butterfly is set with old mine cut diamonds and garnets for eyes. English in origin. Circa 1870.
The butterfly was a common symbol utilized in 19th century decorative arts. Representing, beauty, transformation and the soul.
